FHIR Healthcare Integration
HAPI FHIR + Spring Boot
Developed HL7 FHIR R4 compliant healthcare interoperability demo using HAPI FHIR server framework on Spring Boot 3. System implements FHIR resource APIs (Patient, Observation, Medication, Procedure, DiagnosticReport), SMART-on-FHIR OAuth2 authorization for third-party app integration, FHIR Bulk Data Access API for population health analytics, clinical decision support with drug interaction checking. Demonstrates modern healthcare data exchange patterns: RESTful FHIR APIs, HL7 v2 message parsing for legacy system integration, terminology mapping (SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm), HIPAA-compliant PHI encryption.
The Challenge
Healthcare data scattered across siloed EHR systems prevents coordinated care. Patient records use proprietary formats making interoperability difficult. Legacy HL7 v2 systems lack standardization. Need modern FHIR-based data exchange enabling seamless integration across hospitals, clinics, labs. SMART-on-FHIR apps require OAuth2 authorization. Clinical decision support needs drug interaction checking.
The Solution
Built FHIR R4 compliant server using HAPI FHIR framework on Spring Boot 3. Implemented RESTful FHIR resource APIs (Patient, Observation, Medication, etc.), SMART-on-FHIR OAuth2 auth for third-party apps, FHIR Bulk Data API for analytics, clinical decision support with drug interaction database. HL7 v2 message parser for legacy integration. Terminology mapping (SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm).
