The Challenge
REST APIs with JSON payloads have large sizes and slower serialization. HTTP/2 features (multiplexing, server push) underutilized. Need high-performance inter-service communication. gRPC with Protocol Buffers offers benefits but requires proper patterns: auth, observability, error handling, streaming, testing.
The Solution
Built comprehensive gRPC template using Spring Boot 3.3 WebFlux reactive streams, Protocol Buffers for efficient serialization, grpc-spring-boot-starter for integration.
