Stop Believing These Lies

After 5+ years of serious strength training while building my tech career, I’ve encountered (and believed) every myth in the book. Here’s what I learned the hard way.

Myth #1: “Lifting Heavy Makes Women Bulky”

The Truth: Women have 15-20x less testosterone than men. Building “bulky” muscle requires:

  • Years of dedicated training
  • Caloric surplus
  • Often performance-enhancing substances

Reality: Strength training gives women:

  • Lean, toned physique
  • Metabolic boost (burn more calories at rest)
  • Bone density improvement
  • Functional strength for daily life

Myth #2: “You Need to Feel Sore to Grow”

The Science: DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) ≠ Muscle Growth

What Actually Drives Growth:

  1. Progressive overload (increasing weight/reps/sets over time)
  2. Time under tension (muscle working against resistance)
  3. Adequate protein (0.8-1g per lb bodyweight)
  4. Recovery (where growth happens)

I made my best gains when I stopped chasing soreness and started tracking progression.

Myth #3: “Cardio Kills Gains”

The Nuance:

  • ❌ 60-minute daily runs while bulking = suboptimal
  • âś… 2-3x weekly 20-30 min HIIT = cardiovascular health without muscle loss
  • âś… 10,000 steps daily = LISS that enhances recovery

My Protocol:

Strength Training: 4x/week (primary focus)
HIIT: 2x/week (off days)
Daily walks: 8,000-10,000 steps

Result: Built muscle AND improved VO2 max simultaneously.

Myth #4: “More Protein = More Muscle”

The Science: Protein synthesis caps at ~0.8-1g per lb bodyweight

Personal Experiment:

  • Period 1: 200g protein/day @ 165lbs → Gained 1lb/month
  • Period 2: 140g protein/day @ 165lbs → Gained 1lb/month
  • Conclusion: Wasted money on excess protein

Optimal Strategy:

  • Calculate: Bodyweight (lbs) Ă— 0.8 = daily protein (g)
  • Distribute across 4-5 meals
  • Time 30g within 2 hours post-workout
  • Save money, get same results

Myth #5: “Isolation Exercises Build Size”

The Reality: Compound movements trigger more hormonal response

Muscle Building Hierarchy:

  1. Tier 1 (80% of work):
    • Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Press
    • Pull-ups, Overhead Press, Rows
  2. Tier 2 (15% of work):
    • Romanian Deadlifts, Bulgarian Split Squats
    • Dumbbell Rows, Dips
  3. Tier 3 (5% of work):
    • Bicep Curls, Tricep Extensions
    • Lateral Raises, Calf Raises

My Transformation: Dropped 80% of isolation work → Best muscle growth period.

The Framework That Works

  1. Progressive Overload: Add 5lbs or 1 rep every 2 weeks
  2. Compound Focus: 80% big lifts, 20% accessories
  3. Protein Timing: 0.8-1g/lb distributed evenly
  4. Smart Cardio: HIIT 2x/week + daily walking
  5. Recovery First: Sleep 7-8h, deload every 8 weeks

Track Everything

I built a simple spreadsheet tracking:

  • Exercise, sets, reps, weight
  • Bodyweight (weekly average)
  • Progress photos (monthly)
  • Strength benchmarks

Data reveals truth - not feelings or soreness.

The Bottom Line

Strength training is simple but not easy:

  • Lift progressively heavier weights
  • Eat adequate protein
  • Sleep enough
  • Repeat for years

No secrets. No hacks. Just consistent execution of proven principles.
