Saved 50% of Income for 3 Years - On Track to Retire at 40

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) isn’t a meme. It’s math.

The FIRE Formula

Simple Math:

  • Save 10% → Retire in 51 years
  • Save 25% → Retire in 32 years
  • Save 50% → Retire in 17 years
  • Save 75% → Retire in 7 years

My Goal: Save 50%, retire by 40 (started at 25)

Calculate Your FIRE Number

4% Rule:

  • Annual expenses × 25 = FIRE number
  • Example: $40K/year × 25 = $1,000,000
  • Withdraw 4%/year = $40K (never runs out)

My Numbers:

  • Annual expenses: $30K (lean lifestyle)
  • FIRE number: $30K × 25 = $750K
  • Current savings rate: 50% ($30K saved/year)
  • Years to FIRE: ~15 years (started at 25, retire at 40)

The 50% Savings Strategy

Income: $60K/year ($5K/month) Saved: $30K/year ($2,500/month) Spend: $30K/year ($2,500/month)

How I Live on $2,500/month:

  • Rent: $800 (roommate, LCOL city)
  • Food: $400 (meal prep, no dining out)
  • Transport: $150 (used car, bike to work)
  • Utilities: $100 (split with roommate)
  • Phone: $25 (Mint Mobile)
  • Insurance: $200 (health, car, renters)
  • Entertainment: $100 (free hobbies, library)
  • Misc: $725 (clothing, gifts, emergencies)

Total: $2,500/month

Where the Savings Go

Investment Strategy ($2,500/month):

Retirement Accounts ($1,500/month):

  • 401(k): $1,000 (employer match maxed)
  • Roth IRA: $500 ($6K/year limit)
  • Tax-advantaged, can’t touch until 59.5

Taxable Brokerage ($1,000/month):

  • Index funds (VTSAX, VTI)
  • Accessible anytime (for early retirement)

Total: $30K/year invested

Asset Allocation

Aggressive (Age 25-35):

  • 90% Stocks (index funds)
  • 10% Bonds (stability)

Moderate (Age 35-45):

  • 70% Stocks
  • 30% Bonds

Conservative (Age 45+):

  • 50% Stocks
  • 50% Bonds

My Current (Age 28):

  • 90% VTI (Total US Stock Market)
  • 10% BND (Total Bond Market)
  • Rebalance annually

Cutting Expenses

Big Wins (80% of savings):

  • Housing: Roommate, LCOL city (save $800/month)
  • Car: Used, paid off (save $400/month)
  • Food: Meal prep (save $300/month)

Small Wins (20% of savings):

  • Phone: Mint Mobile vs Verizon (save $50/month)
  • Gym: Calisthenics vs membership (save $50/month)
  • Coffee: Home brew vs Starbucks (save $100/month)

What I Don’t Cut:

  • Quality food (health > money)
  • Hobbies I love (life isn’t about deprivation)
  • Experiences with friends (frugal, not cheap)

Increasing Income

Side Hustles (Extra $1K/month):

  • Freelance web dev (weekends)
  • Investing tutorials (YouTube ad revenue)
  • All extra income → investments

Career Growth:

  • Switched jobs 2× in 3 years
  • $45K → $52K → $60K
  • Each raise = increase savings, not lifestyle

Target: $80K income in 2 years (save $40K/year)

Tax Optimization

Reduce Tax Burden:

  • 401(k) contributions - Pre-tax ($1,000/month)
  • Traditional IRA - Deduct if eligible
  • HSA - Triple tax advantage (if HDHP)

Tax-Loss Harvesting:

  • Sell losing investments
  • Offset capital gains
  • Save on taxes

Roth Conversion Ladder:

  • Convert traditional IRA to Roth
  • Access in 5 years (early retirement strategy)

The FI Mindset

FIRE Isn’t About Retirement:

  • It’s about options
  • Work if you want, not because you must
  • Financial independence = freedom

What I’ll Do “Retired”:

  • Build projects I care about
  • Travel (slowly, cheaply)
  • Volunteer, teach
  • Not sit on a beach (that’s boring)

Common Objections

“I can’t save 50%”:

  • Start with 10%, then 15%, then 20%
  • Every % helps
  • Focus on big 3: housing, transport, food

“Life is short, enjoy now”:

  • I do enjoy now (just frugally)
  • Delayed gratification = decades of freedom
  • Balance enjoying today + securing tomorrow

“What if market crashes?”:

  • Has happened before, will again
  • Stay invested, don’t panic sell
  • Historically recovers and grows

“You’ll miss out on experiences”:

  • Experiences don’t require money
  • Hiking, reading, cooking, friends = free
  • Less consumerism = more meaningful life
