I Deleted 80% of My Apps and Got 20 Hours Back Per Week
From digital overwhelm to intentional tech use. The developer’s guide to digital minimalism.
The Problem (You Probably Have It Too)
Before Minimalism:
- 150+ apps on phone
- 50+ browser tabs always open
- 12+ Slack workspaces
- 8 productivity apps (ironic)
- Checked phone 200+ times daily
- Notifications every 3 minutes
- Felt: Busy, distracted, exhausted
The Wake-Up Call: Spent 4.5 hours on phone one Sunday. Realized I’d been “working” 12 hours but accomplished 2 hours of real work. Digital distractions were stealing my life.
Digital Minimalism Philosophy
Core Principle: Intentional tech use
Not About:
- ❌ Deleting everything
- ❌ Going off-grid
- ❌ Rejecting technology
- ❌ Being a luddite
Actually About:
- âś… Keeping tools that add value
- âś… Removing digital noise
- âś… Intentional vs. reactive
- âś… Tech serves you, not vice versa
The Digital Declutter
My 30-Day Process:
Week 1: Audit (Awareness)
- Track phone screen time (shocking)
- List every app, tool, subscription
- Note: Which added value? Which drained time?
- My total: 147 apps, 23 subscriptions, 8 Slack workspaces
Week 2-4: Elimination (Ruthless)
- Delete, cancel, unsubscribe
- 30-day test period
- If I missed it: Evaluate re-adding
- Result: Kept 31 apps, 6 subscriptions, 2 Slacks
My Deletion Criteria:
- Haven’t used in 30 days? → Delete
- Dopamine-driven (mindless scrolling)? → Delete
- Creates FOMO or anxiety? → Delete
- Can I do this on desktop instead? → Delete from phone
- Is this truly essential? → Keep

- Now: Max 5 tabs per window
- Close at end of day

- Hide dock/taskbar (appears on hover)
- Clean workspace = clear mind
Menu Bar:
- Only essentials visible
- Hidden: Date, battery, unnecessary icons
- Use: Bartender app (Mac) or similar
Apps:
- Same philosophy as phone
- Delete unused apps monthly
- Keep: Only what adds value
Digital Files:
- Cloud storage organized (Google Drive, Dropbox)
- Follow: PARA method (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archive)
- Delete old files annually
- Principle: If not accessed in 1 year, archive or delete

Email Minimalism
Inbox Zero Protocol:
Daily Routine (10 AM, 3 PM only):
- Open email (not throughout day)
- Process every email:
- Delete: 70% (newsletters, promos)
- Reply: 20% (2 min or less, do immediately)
- Defer: 10% (add to Todoist, archive email)
- Close email app
- Never: Keep email open all day
Unsubscribe Ruthlessly:
- Used: Unroll.me (bulk unsubscribe)
- Rule: If not opened in 30 days → unsubscribe
- Result: 150 → 12 newsletter subscriptions
Filters:
- Auto-label and archive (receipts, notifications)
- Skip inbox for non-urgent
- Only important emails hit inbox
- Inbox: 5-10 emails daily vs. 100+
Email Bankruptcy (Fresh Start):
- Archive everything older than 30 days
- If important, they’ll follow up
- Start with clean slate
- Freedom: Stop managing backlog
Social Media Minimalism
My Approach: Desktop only, time-boxed
No Apps on Phone:
- Access via browser only
- Makes it intentional, not habitual
- Have to type URL (friction = good)
Scheduled Time:
- Twitter: 20 min/day (morning coffee)
- LinkedIn: 15 min/day (engage with posts)
- Reddit: 10 min/day (specific subreddits only)
- Total: 45 min/day vs. 3+ hours before
Content Creation Only:
- Post valuable content
- Don’t scroll feed mindlessly
- Share, engage, leave
- Rule: Create > Consume
Follow Minimalism:
- Unfollow 80% of accounts
- Keep: Only accounts adding value
- Avoid: Influencers, news, drama
- Feed: Valuable signal, no noise
Alternative:
- Some people quit entirely (respect)
- I use for professional networking
- Your choice: What adds value?
Communication Minimalism
Slack Workspaces:
- Before: 8 workspaces (overwhelming)
- After: 2 workspaces (work + one side project)
- Left: Old jobs, unused communities
- Mental freedom: Massive
Slack Habits:
- Notifications: OFF (check hourly)
- Status: ”🔴 Do Not Disturb” during deep work
- Channels: Only relevant ones (mute rest)
- Response time: 1-2 hours acceptable (not instant)
Messaging Apps:
- Consolidated to: WhatsApp (personal), Signal (private), Slack (work)
- Deleted: Telegram, Discord, FB Messenger, WeChat
- Principle: Fewer platforms, deeper connections
Text Messages:
- Batch responses (2Ă— daily)
- Not every message needs instant reply
- Important = call, not text thread
- Boundaries: People adapt

Minimalism for Developers
Code Minimalism:
- Delete commented-out code (use Git)
- Remove unused imports, variables
- Refactor complex functions
- Principle: Less code = less bugs
Project Minimalism:
- Finish projects before starting new ones
- Active projects: Max 2 at a time
- Archive old repos
- Focus: Depth > breadth
Learning Minimalism:
- Don’t hoard courses (consumption trap)
- One course at a time, finish it
- Build projects > watch tutorials
- Principle: Learn by doing
Tool Minimalism:
- Don’t chase every new framework
- Master your stack deeply
- New tool: Must be 10Ă— better
- Resist: Shiny object syndrome
Common Objections Answered
“But I need to stay updated!”:
- Curated newsletter (1-2 weekly) > constant news
- Quality sources > quantity
- You’ll hear about important things
- FOMO is false: Nothing is urgent
“What if someone needs me?”:
- Real emergencies: They’ll call
- Most “urgent” isn’t
- People adapt to response time
- Boundaries: Healthy, necessary
“I’ll miss out socially!”:
- Real friends: Text, call, meet in person
- Social media ≠real social connection
- Quality relationships > follower count
- Reality: You’ll connect deeper
“I need it for work!”:
- Distinguish essential vs. habit
- Work Slack ≠personal social media
- Can always access desktop

Less digital noise = More real life
Start with one thing: Delete social media apps from phone tonight. Use browser only. See how you feel in 1 week.
What will you delete first? The hardest one is the one you need to delete most.
